Where Did This Place Come From?

1950- Fur trader and slave owner James McGill bequeaths his 46-acre estate and 10,000 pounds to found the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning, the predecessor of McGill University.  

 

1821- McGill receives a Royal Charter and becomes a university.

aka. the beginning of the end for us.

 

1829- McGill opens its first faculty, the Faculty of Medicine.

1860- A near-bankrupt McGill takes out $40,000 loan from the Province of Canada. (With interest, the allegedly out-standing loan comes to $1.7 billion).

 

1875- James McGill's remains are dug up and reburied in front of the Arts Building. Gross!

1844- Women are admitted to McGill for the first time.

 

1899- Royal Victoria College, the all female residence, is established, and dedicated by one official to "the preservation of glorious virginity"

 

1957-1960- The CIA funds McGill researcher Dr. Ewen Cameron's brain washing experiements as part of Project MKULTRA, an attempt to develop mind-control techniques during the Cold War.

 

1963- McGill professor Gerald Bull begins test-firing new missiles he calls "martlets", named after McGill's mascot. He later sells weapons to apartheid South Africa and, most infamously, works on the Project Babylon "supergun", for Saddam Hussein. In 1990, he is assasinated under mysterious circumstances.
